THE KILLERS
When You Were Young Mercury
****

Brandon Flowers moves from waiter to maitre d', with a big, Brucie tune from the band's long-awaited follow-up to Hot Fuss. They flirted with stadium rock, but now they're giving it a right seeing-to, and making us all feel young again - with 1980s mullets.

SCISSOR SISTERS
I Don't Feel Like Dancin' Polydor

Is this the comedown after the all-night disco party? Not a bit of it. You can't keep Jake Shears off the dancefloor for too long, especially with this pumpin' tune featuring piano from the disco queen himself, Elton John. Oh, what a night.

FERGIE
London Bridge A&M
**

The singer from Black Eyed Peas invites us to board her open-topped bus and take a naughty sightseeing tour around her Buckingham Palace. The title is, of course, a euphemism for something very rude - oh, don't be such a Trafalgar Square.

ROYSEVEN
Older Island
**

This Irish lot used to be called Jove, and we were assured (repeatedly) that they were going to be huge. The sound certainly aspires to Coldplay/Keane levels of epic sincerity, but methinks the era of plodding piano anthems and over-emoting singers is already passing.

MUSE
Starlight A&E

He used to be an android of Thom Yorke, but tonight Matt Bellamy is Midge Ure without the moustache and mac, bringing some Vienna aroma to this song from fab new album Black Holes and Revelations. This means nothing to me, but I like it.

BERNARD FANNING
Wish You Well Dew Process
***

Fanning is the singer with Aussie combo Powderfinger - dunno what they sound like, but this solo tune is a rootsy effort inspired by the blues rockers of the 1970s. His album, Tea & Sympathy, has already gone five times platinum Down Under, so the band will have to be really nice to him to get him back into the fold.

PUSSYCAT DOLLS
I Don't Need a Man A&M
**

It's the oldest chick trick in the book - act all independent and we'll come running back, begging like dogs. The laugh is, we fall for it every time - especially if it's accompanied by a raunchy video.
