Reel News was in Edinburgh this week for that beautiful city’s first-rate film festival. As ever, booze flowed freely, the hospitality was warm and Sean Connery appeared on the front of the paper every day. This writer did, however, encounter some hostility when, while eating haggis, neeps and tatties (really) in a fine restaurant, a baby vomited violently over his unsuspecting head.

Never mind. Duncan Jones, director of Moon, pretended not to notice the whiff of partly digested porridge as he discussed his excellent science-fiction drama.

Jones, once known to tabloids as Zowie Bowie, will have to endure questions about his famous dad (work it out for yourself, readers) for a few years yet, but, if his super debut is any guide, he will soon forge his own persona.

Other highlights of the event included Sam Mendes's Away We Goand Jonathan auf der Heide's Van Diemen's Land, a tough, hypnotic drama – much of it delivered in Irish – set in a 19th-century Tasmanian penal colony.

The main topic of debate in the Filmhouse bar was whether Hannah McGill, the festival’s director, had been right to move the event away from the main Edinburgh International Festival in August. Fellow journalists such as Jason Solomons view the change as a triumph, whereas Reel News and his chums can’t help but think that the atmosphere is now a little less invigorating.
