Shuffle is one of those words that has acquired an additional layer of meaning with the advent of the iPod, and it’s appropriate to Richard Gorman’s practice of rearranging a set of given elements to produce boldly patterned abstract paintings. The elements are simple: “overlapping flat shapes”, coloured with oil paint “applied quite flatly”. But the arrangements and relationships generated are complex and limitless.

Irish-born, Gorman has been based largely in Milan since the 1980s. When he originally went there, he was making densely textured compositions, full of gesture and incident. Gradually, he’s refined his method, concentrating more on a range of toned-down but strong colour and spare, often lozenge-like forms, to produce work of elegance, clarity – and wit.
