Some weeks ago, this page devoted attention to a group of pictures assembled by the solicitor John Leo Burke who died in 1959. A personal friend of Eamon de Valera, Burke's collection included work by Walter Osborne, William Leech and Nathaniel Hone and these are to be auctioned on Wednesday at the James Adam salerooms at 2.15 p.m.
But there are many other excellent examples of Irish art included in the same event, such as that shown here, a relatively early oil by Leo Whelan and showing a Woman at the Well. As befits its status as an admirable instance of early 20th century genre painting, the lot carries a pre-sale estimate of £15,000 to £25,000. A higher figure of up to £30,000 is expected for a small Jack Yeats oil called The Fern in the Area and an early Paul Henry, Red Earth, dating from the artist's time on Achill Island has an estimate of £100,000 to £150,000.
