From delight to bore, big hats are now a fashion nono. Go to a race meeting or a wedding and every woman seems to be colliding with the door frame or struggling to be kissed on the cheek beneath an enormous crown and brim. Outside a handful of occasions, hats no longer serve any function other than to make the wearer look rather self-conscious and silly. If you must wear one, make it something small, like a cloche; otherwise, bare-headed is best.
