No deliverance in critical drama

The winner of the best documentary award at the Los Angeles Film Festival last weekend, Deliver Us From Evil relates the story of an Irish former Catholic priest, Oliver O'Grady who served seven years in a Californian prison on charges of child molestation.

Having seen a work-in-progress version of the film earlier this year, I found it harrowing and shocking, not least in the candour with which O'Grady talks about his activities in an interview in Dublin with the film's director, Amy Berg.

The film is highly critical of the church's protection of O'Grady, and it proves deeply moving as the parents of one of his victims express their sense of betrayal and outrage.

Reviewing it at the LA festival, Variety critic Robert Koehler described it as "a genuine horror movie".
