CORK gets a new festival this month with a UCC based, two day celebration of contemporary music on tomorrow and Saturday, writes Michael Dervan. The moving force behind the event is UCC music lecturer John Godfrey, a member of the British contemporary ensemble, Icebreaker. The programming, which inclines towards minimalism in taste, will include Irish premieres of works by Steve Reich (Tehillim) and Louis Andriessen (On Jimmy Yancy), and new pieces by Irish composers Eoghan Harris, Deirdre McKay and Louise McCarthy.
Also featured is Terry Riley's seminal, mid Sixties In C. Performers include the UCC New Music Ensemble, the Waterford New Music Ensemble, Ian Wilson (who's featured as both pianist and composer) and the Band of the Southern Command.
