Further proof that great songs will trump overblown hype every time. We know very little about Cults except that there’s two of them, they hail from San Diego and they’re studying film in New York. But we know what they sound like and that’s more than enough to begin with.
Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin entered the fray when they uploaded three songs to their Bandcamp page so their friends could hear what they were up to. Soon after, their hazy, sumptuous, bittersweet Balaeric pop went viral. Music blogs flipped their wigs, new label Forest Family offered to release a single and their studies probably took a bit of a hit as they dealt with the rumpus.
While Follin has some previous form – she did some singing for a band called Youth Gone Mad when she was a nipper – this is a largely new endeavour for the duo. The plan now is to finish the album, which is already in the works, and flex their live chops. Not much time, it seems, for watching black and white films.
