Whether you’re looking for links, or discovering dramatic shifts, Then + Now is intriguing and rewarding. Taking a selection of works from UCC’s art collection, which date from the 1960s on, the exhibition’s curators asked participating artists for a new work to show alongside them. The response was Impressive: Katherine Boucher Beug, Barrie Cooke, Maud Cotter, Dorothy Cross, Simon English, Helen Farrell, Billy Foley, Joy Gerrard, Clare Langan, Louis le Brocquy, Anne Madden, Alice Maher, Janet Mullarney, Collette Nolan, Eilís O’Connell, Brian O’Doherty, Hughie O’Donoghue, Mick O’Shea, Michael Quane, Ben Reilly, Vivienne Roche, Paul Seawright and Charles Tyrell.

And if the project was a trip down memory lane for the artists, it’s a snapshot of crucial and critical developments in contemporary Irish art for us. Including Brian O’Doherty’s reconstruction of an early rope drawing, the exhibition is a treasure house of image and ideas.
