Last week at the Adams/Bonhams Irish art sale, an oil by Northern Irish painter William Conor sold for £28,000; called A Rousing Chorus, the picture shows a group of singers. Next week, a similar Conor comes up at auction in Belfast.
The other difference between the two works is that The Accordion Player is of wax crayon on paper and this explains the somewhat lower estimate of £18,000-£20,000 sterling. It is one of some 300 lots being offered by Ross's in the company's own sale of Irish art, in which many of the most familiar names will feature.
Among the items carrying the highest figures are William Scott (Still Life, £12,000-£14,000), Colin Middleton (Mother & Child, £10,000-£15,000), Basil Blackshaw (Whippet, £10,000-£15,000) and Frank McKelvey (County Down Landscape, £10,000-£12,000). The sale is due to start at 7 p.m.
