Eileen O'Mahoney from Dungarvan, in Co Waterford, e-mailed PriceWatch about a recent shopping expedition in Germany.

She was surprised how cheap Irish whiskey was there. A 70cl bottle of Kilbeggan cost 25, a bottle of Paddy 10.98 and a bottle of Jameson €10.98. All were 40 per cent alcohol, the same strength as Irish bottles. None of them was on special offer: these were the normal prices, and duty was fully paid.

In Ireland, the same bottle of Kilbeggan typically costs €22.95, the same bottle of Paddy 5 and the same bottle of Jameson 5. Excise duty makes up about €11 of those prices.
