Hope for survivors in rubble fades

New York - Rescue workers brought in more heavy equipment to clear the smouldering ruins of the World Trade Centre yesterday, a tacit admission that hope for finding survivors among the 6,333 missing was all but gone.

New York's fire commissioner said workers had made an unofficial transition from the search for survivors to clearing the site.
