GAME OF THE WEEK:CHOPLIFTER HD **** Konami, Xbox 360 (also PC, PS3)
Gamers of a certain age will remember Choplifterback in the 1980s, first as an Apple II title, then later a Sega arcade game. Someone has decided it's due for a comeback, joining an ever-expanding trip down memory lane. New to the Xbox Live Arcade and the PS Network, Choplifter HDhas been given a facelift and is back with a bang.
You take on the role of an up-and-coming rescue pilot who joins an elite rescue team. As expected, the rescues are daring, with a variety of helicopters to take control of during more than 30 missions as you try to dodge enemy fire and the odd zombie. The weapons are bigger and the explosions better, and you get more choppers to choose from.
The missions cover everything from prisoner extraction to saving civilians and rescuing survivors of a virus outbreak, all while avoiding being blown up or accidentally squashing one of your intended rescuees. And you’ll have to keep an eye on your passenger load, your fuel and your ammo all the while. There’s a lot to think about – maybe a little too much at times.
Choplifter HDis a bit more polished than the original, but not overly so. It keeps the side-scrolling format, and the graphics are fine but not perfect. It's every bit as good as you remember the original to be, flaws and all. And watch out for the cameos – a few surprising and well-known faces pop up from time to time.
Coming back to reach that top star rating on each level means you’ll be playing this one for a while, even if you do breeze through the early levels.
