Generous amount of woods on sale
There appears to be a generous amount of satinwood in next Monday's sale at Mullen's of Laurel Park in Dublin. This material crops up with a pair of painted side tables, for example, which are expected to fetch £2,500-£3,500 and a china cabinet, also painted and carrying the same estimate. In addition, Mullen's is offering for sale a satinwood Sheraton-style bow-front linen chest on chest (£1,800-£2,200). But there is, naturally, still plenty of mahogany, such as a Georgian serpentine sideboard dating from circa 1800 (£3,000-£4,000) and an Edwardian inlaid display cabinet (same estimate). Although Victorian mahogany breakfront bookcases turn up constantly at auctions, they always find a buyer so no doubt the estimate of £3,500-£4,500 for one next Monday will quickly be met. Similarly, a Victorian mahogany extending dining table circa 1850 ought to have no trouble selling for £2,000-£3,000 even though the top is later than the base. Work by Hicks also enjoys consistent popularity; on this occasion, a mahogany serpentine side table bearing the maker's stamp is expected to go for £1,500-£1,800. Among other woods in the sale is walnut, used in a bureau bookcase with 13-pane astragal glazed doors (£1,800-£2,200), while an ebonised and pollard oak bookcase in vaguely neo-classical manner bears a pre-sale estimate of £2,800-£3,200. Lastly, two other lots worthy of mention are a French kingwood bureau plat with customary brass detailing (£1,500-£2,500) and an Adam-style brass and steel serpentine-fronted fire grate circa 1880 (£2,000-£2,500).
O'Regans sale offers 500 lots
O'Regan's Auctioneers of Cork will be holding a sale on the company's Lavitts Quay premises next Thursday starting at 10 a.m. This looks like being a substantial occasion with more than 500 lots covering everything from silver by William Egan of Cork to a medal issued to a participant in the 1916 Easter Rising. Furniture features strongly, thanks to the inclusion of such items as Georgian and Victorian sideboards, a pair of Georgian giltwood foot stools, a set of 12 Victorian chairs and a number of grandfather clocks. There will also be paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, coins and notes, postcards and other miscellaneous collectables.
Mullen expects bateau to fetch up to £2,000
Michael Mullen of Oldcastle, Co Meath expects a French inlaid marquetry lit en bateau to sell for £1,500-£2,000 at the auction he is conducting next Tuesday, starting at 6.30 p.m. He has a number of other enticing lots in the same sale, such as a Victorian mahogany pedestal writing desk (£1,000-£1,250), a four piece Victorian bedroom suite (also £1,000-£1,250), an Irish William IV mahogany wine cooler (£600-£800) and a Regency fold-over card table (£500-£700). In addition, there is to be some small pieces of antique silver and silver gilt, together with sporting and hunting paintings.
