Carving out a piece of maritime memorabilia
A piece of scrimshaw - a carving made by a sailor - showing the whaling ship Australia at anchor will be among the items on sale at the Dublin Castle antiques and collectables fair tomorrow. The engraving inscription reads, "Carved by Adam Mossman, Second Mate", who signed on at Sydney on May 12th, 1836. This fair will also include a piece of old Irish railway memorabilia, a very large shunter's master key. This carries the inscription: "Presented to Miss A.M.G. Moore by the Railway staff, Dungannon, on the occasion of her marriage, September 1926." In addition, the event is to offer a range of silver, china and porcelain, books and prints, coins, maps and small furniture. It is being held in the Old Coach House from 10.30 a.m.
Books illustrated by Harry Clarke for sale
A combined antiques and books fair takes place in Dublin's Newman House tomorrow, with more than 40 dealers taking part. A collection of Harry Clarke-illustrated works - including signed editions of Faust and Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination - will be among the books for sale, together with a first edition of Daniel O'Connell's A History of Ireland Native and Saxon, Plowden's Historical Review of the State of Ireland (published in 1803) and an autographed Elvis Presley scrapbook. In the antique section there will be table linen, French and English late 19th century mantel clocks, jewellery, silver and porcelain.
