HUDSON MOHAWKE
Polyfolk Dance Warp ****

There may be only six tracks on PolyfolkDance, but they all demand to be heard. While the Glasgow producer has already received plaudits for his dirty beats, low-slung electronica and runnings with the Lucky Me crew, this opening account for Warp is unmissable sonic grandstanding. As with Rustie and Flying Lotus, Mohawke has built his rep on wonky beats that split the atom between electronica and hip-hop. Here, the one-time turntable champ cuts and slices sounds into dizzy, wobbly, seemingly haphazard creations, yet each layer is meticulously arranged and applied. Mohawke has the potential to move in any number of directions – Overnightthrows the sort of glammy, gritty shapes you usually get only from big-budget hip-hop producers – but he also knows, as the wonderful Monde shows, that simplicity is not something to sneer at. Time for everyone to get themselves a Mohawke. www.my space.com/hudsonmo
