A report headed "Soldiers, garda claim on alleged stress injury" in Wednesday's editions included speculation on the details of a settlement arising from a claim for compensation made by Comdt Adrian Ainsworth relating to injuries sustained by him.

A press release issued through solicitors for Comdt Ainsworth states that such reports "are grossly misleading in their suggestion that the bulk of the agreed settlement was in respect of noise-induced hearing loss. The State at all times in their defence maintained that the said hearing loss claim was statute-barred.

"The settlement of the action was agreed on the understanding that its terms would remain confidential and very much on the expectation that Comdt Ainsworth's family would be spared unnecessary and unpleasant publicity".

Where errors occur it is the policy of The Irish Times to correct or clarify as soon as practicable.
