The interview with clinical psychologist Olive Travers in yesterday's editions included the sentence "Mandatory reporting ignores the fact that an abuser who is willing to admit he or she is behaving wrongly may be more effectively treated if he or she is referred to a treatment programme rather than the courts."

This should have read "Mandatory prison sentences ignore the fact that an abuser who is willing to admit he or she is behaving wrongly may be more effectively treated if he or she is referred to a community treatment programme rather than sent to prison."

Where errors occur it is the policy of The Irish Times to correct or clarify as soon as practicable.
