Totems Flare Warp***
That Chris Clark ended up on the Warp label is a fortunate twist of fate. Among contemporary electronic music producers, Clark best encapsulates Warp's many twists and turns down through the years. Indeed, there are times when Totems Flare, his fifth album, comes across more as a Warp mix-tape. Yet, in the middle of fond homages to Warp's past ( Primary Balloon Landinghas a Boards of Canada lilt to it) and present (there are Aphex- like acid storms underpinning Totem Crackerjack), Clark also fine-tunes his own range. Growls Garden, for instance, is all scattergun, glitchy, meaty beats, while Look Into the Heart Nowgoes heavy on the electro and Detroit- style loops. Clark's knack for going off the deep end may not be to all tastes, but those looking for an electronic producer with a fondness for pushing the bass will find much to savour here. www.myspace.com/ throttleclark
