Bleached mahogany suite surpasses its estimate

An unusual suite of bleached mahogany furniture in the Regency style and made in High Wycombe at the start of the present century was sold for £4,290 at Hamilton Osborne King in the past week, a respectable increase on the lot's top estimate of £3,700.

An early 19th century mahogany hunt table also surpassed expectations by selling for £1,800, while from the same period a mahogany open armchair and a suite of four single chairs made £1,300.

Other prices included: £1,200 for a late 19th century gilt plaster oval girandole mirror; £950 for a late 19th century walnut and marquetry oval centre table; £900 for a threepiece Celtic tea set made in Dublin in 1928; and £700 for a mid-19th century mahogany three-tier dumb waiter.

Tortoiseshell display cabinets fetch £2,700

A pair of single-door display cabinets, with tortoiseshell and ormolu mounts, fetched £2,700 at last month's fine art auction at Drum's of Malahide, Co Dublin. A two-door display cabinet made £1,600 and £1,200 was paid for a mahogany bowfront sideboard,or buffet, with brass rail back. A sum of £875 was paid for a mahogany breakfront bookcase, with applied decorative brass figureheads, and a two-door credenza cabinet, with a veined green marbled top, went under the hammer for £800.
