Veronica Bolay is well known for her beautiful, shimmering west-of-Ireland landscapes, in which vast expanses of space seem infused with a sense of heightened awareness. It’s as though we, the viewers, are attuned to the slightest atmospheric shifts, to vibrations in the air.

In her latest exhibition, See-Farer, Bolay looks to the landscape and to her more immediate, domestic surroundings. For several years, she notes, “I was in a situation where the inconceivable had taken hold of my life.” She had to deal with an unforeseen medical condition. “My mind tried to extract hope from the daily routine.” But she found that she could not finish the work she began.

She moved on to other things. When, eventually, the problem that beset her was resolved, “ years of uncertainty came to an end”, she found that she was able to return to her unfinished works.
