Curated by Robert Armstrong and James Merrigan, Making Familiar is a cumulative, evolving project that grows over time and spotlights the work of two painters each week. The idea is that there is some level of affinity between each pair of artists, something that will be further explored in discussions in the gallery every Tuesday at 5pm. By this means the curators aim to make the gallery an informal space apart, where visitors can get a sense of the day-to-day concerns of the artists.

The title derives from the journal of American artist David Reed who, with painter Philip Guston, used to escape from their New York studio to go see a movie. Art, it is implied, springs from the everyday experiences common to most people. There’s a very good line-up of artists (including Diana Copperwhite, whose Blind Ambition is at left), from both Ireland and abroad, included.

Can't see that? Catch this:Not I, Neil Jordan's six-screen film installation of Samuel Beckett's play, with Julianne Moore (Aug 10-Sep 9). Imma at NCH, Dublin
