Paul Mosse makes extraordinary, hybrid painting-sculptures that really do defy easy categorisation. He doesn’t make an image or an object in any conventional sense of the terms. Instead, starting from some reference that he finds in the outside world, he embarks on a process that sees the extreme transformation and recycling of materials, usually involving processed wood sheeting in a central role. It is as if he creates a world anew with each piece, making up a set of arbitrary rules that govern and shape its formation.

Formation is an appropriate word, because it often seems as if his finished pieces have been formed through some sequence of natural processes rather than predictable aesthetic criteria. Yet they are, somehow, compelling and even beautiful, directing us to consider the labyrinthine complexity of the world around us, and the underlying unfamiliarity of what seems utterly familiar.
