German shares gained after Wall Street eased Asian fears yesterday. Computer trade on the Xetra DAX also made modest gains with the index closing up 0.73 per cent up at 5,621.71, a gain of 40.47 points. Volkswagen was among the leading advancers following a recommendation by analysts.

Paris CAC-40: 4013.28 (+7.95)

The French bourse closed marginally firmer as early fears of a sharp fall in the wake of Monday's dive on Wall Street proved unfounded. A slightly stronger Dow and yen helped push the market into the black in late trading. Dealers said that France, with its growing economy, represented a safe haven from problems elsewhere, but predictions for today's trade were largely cautious.

The Milan bourse was up 0.63 per cent on the day but off-session highs in paltry trade following the Dow's modest comeback. "The storm seems to have passed," said one dealer. "But funds are only moving on specific news and foreign investors are just watching."
