PlayOutdoors

Remember all of those games you played in the schoolyard as a wee lad or lass? I preferred Lego and Sticklebricks but mainly because I’d worry that I didn’t know the rules or that they wouldn’t be observed properly (yeah, I was a real team player!). This smartphone app was originally designed to help autistic children play with their classmates. It’s essentially a bunch of outdoor games and their rules that might tempt tech-savvy kids to switch off and get some fresh air.

RaboDirect Straight Talking Christmas Gift Generator

I suspect that this seasonal web app from RaboDirect is tongue in cheek. Otherwise some of the cheapskate gift suggestions would suit someone with pockets as deep as a bank loan manager. Oh wait. So there’s a “love-ometer” and “generous-ometer” and a gender switch in order to tweak suggestions for the recipient. I chose a medium spend for a female friend and was told that a four-ink pen would be great. It’s a bit of a laugh but don’t use the suggestions for actual presents.

Philosophy Bro

For anyone who has ever disliked, misunderstood or feared philosophy, there’s a blog for you. It’s Philosophy Bro; the immature Immanuel Kant, the frat house Francis Bacon.

As you read his explanation of Plato’s cave you might think it silly and rife with swear words but it is one way of making philosophy more accessible. His thoughts on individual insight: “You can’t force knowledge into a dumb-ass any more than you can force sight into a blind man”.
