Office 2011 for Mac

€249.95 (one licence)

It’s about time Apple users got an updated version of Office. The latest software clears up a lot of the annoying glitches that plagued 2008 users and brings in the “ribbon” for common tasks that has been both welcomed and reviled by users of the Windows version. Gone is Entourage for e-mail and in its place is Outlook.

There are also more collaborative tools built into Office 2011, allowing you to share Powerpoint presentations and work on documents together quickly and easily. Media editing options allow you to perform functions such as colour corrections and removing the background.

The software even looks better, with more options for templates and a more up to date interface. It’s not perfect, or course, but then what is?

Stewart/Stand wallet €70

One for the security conscious, the Stewart/Stand wallet is made from stainless steel fabric. That’s not to keep people from breaking into it though; instead, the wallet is designed to protect against identity theft by thieves armed with handheld RFID (radio frequency identification) scanners.

You might scoff and call it paranoia, but sometimes it’s better safe than sorry and, as you add to your RFID tally, it might not be a bad idea.

The wallet doesn’t look bad either and, being made from stainless steel means it will be strong. If shiny isn’t your colour, it also comes in a leather version with the stainless steel on the inside.

Devotec Solar Sound 2 speaker €80

Solar power and Ireland are not two things that fit together naturally, but there’s more to the Devotec Solar Sound 2 than just environmentally friendly power.

The Bluetooth-enabled speaker connects to your music player, laptop or other audio device and allows you to bring your music on the go.

As wireless speakers go, the sound quality from the Solar Sound 2 is pretty good. The speakers are positioned at either end of the device, so you if you don’t block them, you can get good volume.

Music and volume controls are located on a touch-sensitive pad.

It also functions as a hands- free kit for your phone, with a built-in microphone to take calls should one interrupt you.
