Me & My Money Laurie Cearr, GM, KBC Great Music in Irish Houses

Are you a saver or a spender?
A bit of both. I think it's important to have something for the "rainy day". I'm not a shopaholic, but I like a spontaneous purchase. I love dining out. I think life could be very dull without the occasional indulgence, but I wouldn't consider myself frivolous with money.

Do you shop around for better value?
I feel that I know what is good value and I pretty much know where I can get value for money. Sometimes you do have to pay a little more for quality, but it does tend to last longer or taste better – especially wine. In the long run, you get what you pay for.

What has been your most extravagant purchase ever?
A red BMW Coupe which cost €30,000. I sold it six months later. It was a real extravagance for me, and I think the problem was that it was a low car and not suitable for me, as my legs aren't really that long.

What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?
Our home. I've lived there with my husband, Myles, for over 14 years. It's a very bright house with a nice garden. We bought it when prices were just starting to go up. People thought we were mad, but we're close to town, close to the coast, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

What ways do you prefer to shop – online or local?
Local. We are lucky in Sandymount in that we have great local shops where you can get anything from a skirt to a steak to a screwdriver. It's important to get to know your local shopkeeper, they will look after you well.

Do you haggle over prices?
It does not hurt to ask for a better price. In business, I've no problem with it at all.

Has the recession changed your spending habits?
Not excessively. I am not a shopaholic and I don't feel I was a pre-recession spender.

Do you invest in shares?
I don't find shares to be a wise investment unless you are immersed in and monitor them daily.

Cash or card?
Card mostly; it's more convenient and I can keep track of my expenditure.

What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?
Paperwhite Kindle – it's terrific value. I love books, but the Kindle is great.

Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?
Not consciously. I know when I can afford something I need or want.

Have you ever lost money?
Yes, a considerable amount. It was upsetting, but you have to move on or you would never get over the loss.

Are you a gambler and if so have you ever had a big win?
I am not a gambler.

Is money important to you?
Not hugely, just as long as I have enough to live comfortably and a little for nice luxuries and for unforeseen emergencies.
