The strong run on the Irish market came to a sudden halt yesterday as profit taking brought falls for most of the major shares. AIB dropped 2p after its 20p rise the previous day in the wake of the announcement of the £840 million acquisition of Dauphin.

Meanwhile the Dow Jones index plunged 94.28 points in late trading as a jump in interest rates triggered an avalanche of profit taking.
