Shares ended dealings in negative territory and barely above the day's lows, knocked by Wall Street's early losses and despite a slightly firmer dollar. Fears of continued Asian turbulence and the weaker-than-expected German December employment numbers dragged the market down.

Paris CAC-40: 2929.81 (-35.13)

Share prices were dragged lower by bearish sentiment stemming from the market meltdown in Asia as the collapse in confidence in the region moved on to Indonesia.

Milan Mibtel: 17680 (+49)

Italian shares closed marginally ahead after an up-and-down day as fresh liquidity continued to pour into the market, sending indices up even though other markets suffered from the Asian flu.
