The Sean Quinn Group is believed to be planning to build a large cement plant in Co Cavan, which may produce up to one million tonnes a year. A planning application from the had already been correspondence between the company and officials concerning a possible plant.

Yesterday, the Danish cement and engineering group, FLS Industries, said its FL Smidth & Co subsidiary had "secured a contract from the Sean Quinn Group to provide machinery and equipment for a new cement production plant" which would produce one million tonnes of cement annually.

No one from the Sean Quinn Group was available for comment yesterday.

FLS Industries said the contract to supply machinery for the plant is worth 250 million Danish crowns (£25 million). It is understood the plant will be located halfway between Teemore in Co, Fermanagh and Ballyconnell in Co Cavan, just inside the Border.

The Sean Quinn Group currently has several concrete manufacturing plants in the area.

Meanwhile, a decision is still awaited on the Sean Quinn Group's plans for a £40 million glass bottle manufacturing plant in Derryflin, Co Fermanagh. A private company, the Sean Quinn Group owns hotels and public houses throughout the Republic in addition to its five cement factories in Derrylin, and two others in Galway and Longford.

The group set up a direct general insurance operation at the beginning of the year and is understood to be preparing to open a life assurance company to sell life and pensions products.
