Pharmaceutical group Elan will spend $190 million (€212 million) over the next three years expanding its Athlone facility. The investment is expected to rise to around $240 million in five years' time.
The Athlone site employs more than 700 people, including a 220-strong research and development group, and covers 35 acres.
The new additions to the facility will cover 190,000 square feet and will involve the construction of an integrated manufacturing building, an energy centre and additional warehousing capability.
Around 600 contractors will be involved in the construction of the new facility.
