There were mixed fortunes for the defending champions on the opening day of the Inter-varsities tournament at Jordanstown yesterday, with Trinity winning both their games in the women's Chilean Cup but UCD surprisingly losing their first pool match 2-1 to DCU in the men's Mauritius Cup.

Trinity, winners in the last three tournaments, beat the Royal College of Surgeons 5-0, but had just a single goal (1-0) to spare over UCG. UCD share top position in Pool A after beating Queens 1-0, and UCG 3-1.

In Pool B, University of Limerick and the University of Ulster both have five points - they drew 1-1 when they met yesterday.

In the Mauritius Cup UCD bounced back from their morning defeat by DCU to beat the University of Limerick 3-0 later in the day, with Simon Irvine scoring twice, and should still make the semi-finals by beating RCSI today. In Pool B the University of Ulster are top after trouncing UCC 11-0 - Andy Barbour top-scored with a hat-trick - and drawing 3-3 with Trinity.
