Walsh out

Champion jump jockey Ruby Walsh could miss the Listowel Festival later this month after fracturing a collar-bone at Dundalk yesterday. The incident happened at the first fence of the Rossbracken Handicap Chase where the 9 to 4 favourite, Sir Williamwallace, trained by his father, Ted, took a crashing fall.

Turf Club medical officer Walter Halley said: "Ruby has fractured his right collar-bone, and will see orthopaedic surgeon Bill Quinlan for further treatment. He will probably be out of action for at least three weeks."

Auditty took the incident-packed event under Conor O'Dwyer. Arthur Moore's gelding looked set to score when his two nearest rivals Martys Step and Systems Encore both fell independently at the last.

Jason Maguire was in hot water twice with the stewards prior to this race. He was suspended for seven racing days for attempting to weigh out with a defective back-protector - the shoulder pads were missing.

Maguire was also fined £100 for failing to meet his contract to ride at 10st (he was 4lb overweight) on Wherewilitall End. Trainer Peter McCreery successfully requested to the stewards to have Maguire replaced by Tom Treacy.

Wayne Smith took the honours on the Flat section of the card when partnering a double aboard Zuleika and Sterling High.

Zuleika was given a strong ride by Smith to deny Headfoort Rose by a short head in the Mullacrew Claiming Race, while Sterling High led a furlong out for a length and a half success over Eloquent Way in the Knockbridge Handicap.

Gorse was narrowly foiled in his bid to complete a Group-race hat-trick in the Jacobs Goldene Peitsche over six furlongs at Baden-Baden yesterday. Coming off wins at Hamburg and Leopardstown, the Henry Candy-trained 6 to 4 favourite, ridden by John Reid, was beaten a neck by France's Keos in Germany's premier sprint. Tertullian did best of the home runners in third in the Group Two dash.
