World number two did not play like it until Sunday. Twice beaten on first day, was then left out and was then denied four-ball win by last-green Garcia birdie. Debut came to rousing finale, though, with big win over Parnevik.

Did not win on debut in 1997 and had another tough time for two-and-a-half days. But in dramatic turnaround he clinched Cup with 45-footer on 17th.

Boasted that Americans were "the 12 greatest players in the world". They hardly looked it for two days, but performed well himself. Birdie-birdie finish to inflict only defeat on Montgomerie-Lawrie partnership in second day foursomes, but Lawrie had his revenge in singles.

Missed putts of four and six feet to gift Parnevik and Garcia their second win, changed putter and after morning rest combined with Lehman for win over Clarke and Westwood. Then proved far too good for Sandelin.

Double major winner of 1998 and Woods's main partner in 1997 match lost only outing on first two days and last-green defeat to Padraig Harrington could have had fatal consequences until his team-mates rescued him. Denied he was at odds with Crenshaw over cash-for-play issue.

Steve Pate

Chosen by Crenshaw as second wild card, then sat out first day. Entrance was as Woods's third partner and they had one win, one loss before Pate had vital two and one win over Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Reigning US Open champion was looking forward to match all year, but played only minor and lack-lustre role on first two days. Clash with Colin Montgomerie was building into titanic struggle when it suddenly did not matter and he conceded Montgomerie's closing 20-foot putt so he could get on with celebrating.

Strong man of American line-up. In first match since 1987 was their most effective player on opening two days. Combined with Maggert for two foursomes wins and then took form into singles as well by beating Darren Clarke.

Much was again expected of world number one and, like 1997 debut, again failed to provide lead as America fell four points down. But then was part of last-day revival, defeating Andrew Coltart and at last experiencing team victory after defeats in Ryder Cup, Walker Cup, Presidents Cup and Dunhill Cup.
