EquestrianIreland were one of five teams which failed to advance to the second round of yesterday's Belgian Nations' Cup in Lummen which was won by Italy on a two-round total of eight faults.

With the Irish quartet drawn first of the 14 teams, Dermott Lennon was the competition pathfinder on Loughview Lou Lou and had one fence down. Alexander Butler had the discard score of 17 faults with Will Wimble, Edward Doyle riding Samgemjee faulted once and Shane Breen and Cos I Can picked up eight faults.

Team Ireland Equestrian showjumping manager Robert Splaine commented: “While we like to fly the flag all over the world and win wherever we can, we were on a slightly different mission to most of the teams at this Nations’ Cup, which for me was a fact-finding exercise.

“We have a Super League show coming up next week at La Baule and today’s team was made up of combinations that I wanted to look at as possible candidates for the Super League later in the year. In that respect today was highly informative for me.”
