Pembroke win likely

Hockey: Pembroke Wanderers (men) and Cork Harlequins (women) take part in the European Cup Winners Cup (B divisions) in Vienna this week, writes Dermot Ashmore.

A comfortable win is expected for Pembroke in tomorrow's opening match against Mladost of Croatia. Harlequins can enjoy the consolation of taking the six-team B division title at the expense of modest opposition in Austria.

Athletics: Nearly a quarter of British athletes failed to make themselves available for drugs tests during the last 12 months. In UK Sport's annual doping report due in July, statistics will show nearly 200 of the 800 samples were never collected by anti-doping officers because athletes were not at the addresses supplied.

Motor Sport: Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has extended his contract with Ferrari until the end of the 2004 season.

Cycling: Germany's Danilo Hondo, of the Telekom team, won his second successive Giro D'Italia stage in Potenza yesterday when he triumphed in the third stage. Belgium's Rik Verbrugghe, of the Lotto outfit, retained the pink jersey.

Paralympics: All intellectually disabled athletes were yesterday barred by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) from the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. The ban follows an investigation which concluded two thirds of the paralympians with intellectual disabilities at the 2000 Sydney Games were not eligible to compete, writes Johnny Watterson.

The investigation began following the scandal which surrounded revelations by an undercover reporter that 10 of the 12 members of the Spanish intellectually disabled basketball side were not disabled.
