Michael Johnson anchored the United States 4x400 metres relay team to a world record at the Goodwill Games in New York, winning in 2 minutes 54.20 seconds.

Johnson, the reigning Olympic and world 400 metres champion, had also anchored the former mark of 2:54.29, set by the US team of Andrew Valmon, Quincy Watts, Butch Reynolds and Johnson in 1993 at Stuttgart.

Ireland's Mark Carroll finished seventh in the 5,000 metres in 13:52.76. The winner was Luke Kipkosgei of Kenya in 13:20.27
