Boxing: Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera produced a thrilling boxing showdown in Las Vegas on Saturday night, and one that was being hailed as one of the best fights in the sport's history. The only sadness was that the judges, who made Morales the winner by a split decision on Saturday night, chose the wrong man according to most of those privileged to have watched.

Morales retained the World Boxing Council super-bantamweight title, with Barrera surrendering the World Boxing Organisation version. The two Mexicans produced every move in the book to slip punches, fire in perfect combinations and go toe-to-toe with spine tingling commitment.

Snooker: Irishman Stephen O'Connor was narrowly beaten by world class Englishman Jimmy White in the £295,000 Malta Grand Prix in Valletta last night.

The Irishman led 4-0 and White's chances of staying in the tournament appeared remote. However, the 37-year-old Londoner produced a tremendous fight back to qualify for the next phase, the last 16, with a 5-4 win.

"Some days I go out there and believe I can't believe," explained a relieved White after his 5-4 victory.

Ken Doherty had more luck. He was back to winning ways after defeating Gary Wilkinson 5-1 and now plays Londoner Alfie Burden.
