The GAA yesterday dismissed suggestions that members will enter a debate with representatives of the Gaelic Players' Association on Friday evening's Late Late Show.

Reports were circulating yesterday that GAA president Joe McDonagh would be among the officials appearing to explain the association's refusal to recognise the players' movement.

"We were approached last Wednesday with a view to appearing on last Friday evening's show but the notice was too short so it was decided to consider the matter for the forthcoming show. As the association's views were already clarified in a statement on the matter, as contributions were made to an RTE report which was broadcast on Sunday evening and also to a Breaking Ball focus on the subject which is scheduled for transmission this Friday evening, it was decided not to participate in further debate," clarified the GAA's PRO, Danny Lynch.

While RTE do not release details of the Late Late Show before its broadcast it is believed that GPA members will be interviewed by Pat Kenny. There is speculation that Clare hurler James O'Connor will appear.

At a launch on March 13th, the GAA criticised the motives and the validity of the GPA. "We take issue with a group that would negotiate a sponsorship deal at national level outside of our organisation on behalf of our members, as long as they remain members of the association," said Joe McDonagh. He stressed that the GAA would be committed only to the recommendations of the Players' Advisory Group.

The PGA responded by stating that the association's stance was as they had anticipated. It was also revealed that the group was on the verge of securing a notable sponsorship deal.
