Crewe gain promotion

CREWE claimed the last remaining place in the first division with a deserved victory for Brentford at sun drenched Wembley.

Shaun Smith's first half goal was scant reward for their enterprising football but it was enough to win the second division playoff final against a Brentford side devoid of ideas.

Thee result means that Crewe climb out of the bottom two divisions for the first time since 1896 when they were in the old second division.
