Betting: US PGA

Of all the majors, the US PGA is the one that holds little respect for established names. In this decade alone, eight different players have won the championship and, remarkably, all of them were first-time major winners: Nick Price, winner in 1992, was the only one who went on to regain the title when he won again two years later.

Price's form this season doesn't suggest that he will make it a hat-trick of US PGA successes in the '90s when this year's event takes place at Medinah, starting on Thursday. And the odds of 25 to 1 on him are unlikely to prompt a stampede to the nearest betting office.

Given its reputation as a good breeding ground for major winners - Price, Wayne Grady, John Daly, Paul Azinger, Steve Elkington, Mark Brooks, Davis Love and Vijay Singh all broke their ducks in the event - it may be an ideal opportunity for either David Duval or Colin Montgomerie to finally grasp a major win.

Duval's performance in Carnoustie left quite a number of questions hanging over him. Just how tough is he mentally? He'll be gald to be back in more familiar territory than the wilds of Scotland, that's for sure, and the odds of 12 to 1 second favourite (Tiger Woods is raging hot favourite at 6 to 1) are about as good as you'll get on a Duval win.

For an each-way bet, Steve Stricker, whose form has been a bit patchy this season, has shown enough indications in recent weeks that he is on the way back and may be worth a flutter at 50 to 1.
