Madam, - It seems not so long ago that my mother and women of her generation were required to wear head-dress, usually a scarf or veil, to attend Mass on Sundays. I had to wear a cap at school as part of my uniform.

Chefs, gardaí, surgeons, bakers, sea-captains, pilots, construction workers and judges also have to wear distinctive headgear, either as a signal of their profession or as a protection. Ascot race-goers, men and women, will wear ludicrous but charming top hats and feather-adorned "creations" for fun. Teachers used to wear mortarboards and gowns. So what on earth is the problem about devout Muslim girls wearing hijabs to school? - Yours, etc,
