TRUCKS AND THE PORT TUNNEL

Madam, - According to your edition of August 5th, Mr Tim Brick, deputy city engineer in charge of the Port Tunnel project, believes the 50 to 100 lorries a day which will not fit in the tunnel could easily be handled by the city streets.

Will anyone be checking to see if they are actually too big, or if they are simply avoiding the toll? Furthermore, since supertrucks look almost identical to regular lorries, will anyone be able to spot the difference? The new toll bridge in Drogheda can be avoided easily, without any penalty, simply by driving lorries through the town centre.

Surely the objective of the Port Tunnel is to take lorries off the streets of Dublin? - Yours, etc.,

VINCENT SALAFIA, Idrone Terrace, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
