Sir, – Re Jesmond Harding’s letter (November 17th): turf-cutters have rights and are prepared to negotiate re-location and proper compensation, or to continue under licence, similar to that in Northern Ireland.

Once bogs are closed and untended, dumping may occur that will do far more damage to the flora and fauna than any turf cutting.

Turf-cutters are prepared to discuss all matters with interested parties: equal rights for moths and butterflies on both sides of the Border should be one of these topics. – Yours, etc,
