Madam, - A sincere thank you to Ruarc Gahan (Letters, Nov 9th) for his heart-rending description of the injury to and subsequent death of the deer on a Wicklow road - the victim of a hit-and-run driver. The compassion and kindness he displayed to the stricken animal are an example to us all. It is also in stark contrast to the attitude of the drivers who kill and injure animals on the roads and callously continue driving without any regard to the suffering they have inflicted or to any further suffering which the animal may endure. The vulnerability of animals confers a duty of care on all of us. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be measured by the way its animals are treated". - Yours, etc,
GERARD DELAMERE, Inchicore, Dublin 8.
