Madam, - On one of his last days as a political correspondent, Michael Mills - whose death is reported in Monday's edition - came into Doheny and Nesbitts looking upset. When I asked him what the matter was, he told me of some piece of (relatively) mild political chicanery that he had just seen in the Dáil.

From the depths of my youthful cynicism, I said: "But Michael, you have seen this kind of thing time and again over the past 25 years. Sure it happens nearly every day".

"I know it does, Jim," he said, "but it shouldn't." This was quintessential Michael. He knew very well how things were, but never lost his sense of how they should be. - Yours, etc,
