Sir, - G. Kennedy poses the question in his/her letter as to why Minister Pat Rabbitte would leap into cyberspace and offered two reasons. There is a third reason why a government would want to get involved in any business money.

think most people believe that the retail needs of the country are and will be adequately catered for in the continuing developments taking place. Despite this, the Government wants to extend its retail base further by turning all its tourist offices into retail out lets. The requirement is to make them self sufficient.

This concept, extended to other areas, would see the Department of Agriculture selling animal feeds and fertilisers and the Department of Education selling schools and office supplies, etc. Add these developments to the ESB shops, and the Government would be a major retail player.

As a principle, this Government should not be allowed to compete with existing business. The Minister appears to think differently. What do you think?
