Sir - I refer to the excellent article by Denis Coghlan, June 8th, "Labour Sinks in Low Tide".

At long last the Irish people have begun to call Labour's bluff. Having been elected with 33 seats on a tide of self righteousness in 1992, they immediately treated the Irish electorate with contempt, surrounding themselves with unelected advisers and programme managers.

Labour purports to represent the less fortunate in our society, and despite being part of a coalition - the most left wing government in the history of the state - Labour have not focused on the realities of unemployment and poverty.

Four out of every 10 children live in poverty - 26 per cent of children on this tiny island live below the poverty line, in spite of a booming economy. The long term unemployed are a forgotten entity and have been left behind.

Politicians have been elected to bring a sense of social values and order to the populace. Mr Spring and his cohorts lectured in the Dail for years when in Opposition. Perhaps Labour should now practice what they preached.
