Madam, - David Gilmore (February 28th) uses the nauseous phrase "morally declining" to describe the state of contemporary (presumably, and to use another disreputable phrase) first-world society.
However, this blatantly beggars the question: morally declining from what? From a century that saw the rise and despicable results of reactionary revolutions such as fascism and national socialism? From the centuries-long aggressive and oppressive actions of a morally adamantine church with its inquisitions and crusades (coupled, of course, with its modern-day failure to protect and succour the most vulnerable)?
So just what are we now in decline from? - Yours, etc,
ROSS COYLE, Lindsay Road, Dublin 9.
