Sir, - If junior hospital doctors find it necessary to take strike action in pursuit of shorter working hours, they will be performing a public service no less important than the service they provide while they are working. By taking the action they propose, doctors will be representing the interests of ordinary working people who are entitled to the best health service possible.

However, representing the public interest is the role of another group of public servants, namely, the Government. What a shame members of that group have to be forced to do what they are elected and paid to do. - Yours, etc.,
